In the meantime, the woman found herself with child. Prior to this, the king believed that her condition would remain a secret from her husband, for although he held the role of a prophet, his desires had completely obscured his judgment. She approached the king, exclaiming, “O king, I am doomed! What troubles you? I carry life within me: the fruit of my wrongdoing is growing, the weight of my guilt I bear in my womb, the evidence of my transgressions has increased; I am burdened by my own proof. If my husband should return and see me, what shall I say or devise?”

The other sinful act stemmed from humiliation. Upon discovering that his wife was expecting a child, he sought to evade blame and took every measure to prevent causing her further distress. He summoned Uriah, believing that after an extended absence, he would return to the city and desire to reunite with his wife.
