The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Uriah, her spouse, returned from battle and came before the king. The king inquired, "How are you, Uriah? What news from the front?" To which he replied, "Everything is well; we have achieved victory." While the king learned of Uriah's triumph, he was aware of his own spiritual downfall; the soldier had emerged victorious in warfare, yet the king had succumbed to temptation. Though Uriah spoke of conquest, he refrained from mentioning his own disgrace due to the weight of shame. "We have triumphed," he affirmed, highlighting their success. Meanwhile, the king felt a heaviness in his heart, unable to share in the joy of victory due to the burdensome guilt of his own defeat.
