2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

To demonstrate that familial ties do not ensure protection, Amnon harbored an immoral desire for his sister Tamar.

Fructuosus of Braga

7th centuryChurch Father

One should not place confidence in past purity, for there is none more upright than David nor more wise than Solomon, yet even they allowed their hearts to be clouded by their interactions with women. To prevent anyone from thinking that their purity is secure in the presence of a female family member, one should recall how Tamar was wronged by Amnon, who pretended to be ill. Therefore, both monks and nuns ought to lead such a chaste existence that they can genuinely bear witness not only before God but also in the sight of humanity, providing their followers with an example of sanctity.
