John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Why, you will say, will God permit all this? What is His intention? What benefit is there from the coming of Antichrist if it will be for our destruction? Do not fear, beloved, but listen to what the Apostle says. Antichrist will prevail only over those who are perishing, who would not have believed even if he had not come. What benefit will come from this, you ask? The mouths of those condemned to perdition will be stopped. How so? They would not have believed in Christ even if Antichrist had not come. But he will come in order to expose them. Then they will not be able to say, “Since Christ called Himself God, though He Himself nowhere said this clearly, and only those after Him preached it, we did not believe in Him for this reason.

We heard that there is one God, from whom are all things, and therefore we did not believe.” Antichrist will take this excuse from them. When he comes and commands nothing righteous, but only lawlessness, they will believe in him solely because of his false miracles. Then their mouths will be stopped. Indeed, if you do not believe Christ, you should believe Antichrist still less. The former said that He was sent by the Father, while the latter will say something entirely different. Therefore Christ said, “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me. If another comes in his own name, him you will receive” (Jn 5:43). But they will say, “We saw signs.” Yet many great miracles were also done by Christ. Therefore they ought far more to have believed in Him. Moreover, much was foretold about Antichrist: that he is lawless, that he is the son of perdition, and that his coming is according to the working of Satan. By contrast, it was foretold about Christ that He is the Savior and will bring countless blessings. Who then will be condemned? The Apostle himself explained this, saying, “Those who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in unrighteousness.” By “the love of the truth” he means Christ: “because,” he says, “they did not receive the love of the truth.” Christ was both, and came for both: out of love for mankind and to reveal the true meaning of all things.

"He will send" means, "He will permit him to come." See: first they rejected the truth, and then God left them, and falsehood took possession of them. By the "working of error" the Apostle means the works of Antichrist, which he does in order to deceive. Or perhaps he called Antichrist himself this, as one who acts at Satan's prompting in order to deceive many.

Augustine of Hippo

Then the Apostle adds without hesitation, "And for this reason God will send them a working of error, so that they should believe a lie." God will send it because God will permit the devil to do this. He will permit it according to His own righteous judgment, though the devil will do it according to an unrighteous and evil intention.

Ephraem the Syrian

Therefore, he says, God will send them a lying power so that they will believe the deception. That is, God will permit the one whom they expect to come.

Theodoret of Cyrus

By “the love of the truth” the Apostle named the Lord, as the One who truly and sincerely loved us. The Master Himself also said this to the Jews: “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive” (Jn 5:43). Therefore the Jews especially are left with no excuse. They did not wish to believe the Lord, considering Him opposed to God, yet they will believe Antichrist. Although the Lord did not openly call Himself God, but said that He was sent by the Father, received a commandment from Him, and does what is pleasing to God and the Father, Antichrist will do the opposite. He will call himself the God of all. Yet the Jews await him and will believe when he comes.

And the phrase, “God will send them a working of deception,” is said by the Apostle in place of, “He will permit deception to appear,” so that the lovers of wickedness may be revealed. For God will not send this deception, but will destroy it by the word of His mouth.

Not to recognize one's crime and not to repent is the wrath of God. As it is written, "The Lord sent into him a spirit of drunkenness" (Isa 19:14), so that they would not turn, be healed, or be cured after their sins through prayers and just satisfaction. The Apostle Paul speaks affirmatively in his epistle: "Because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them a working of error, so that they should believe a lie, that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (2 Thess 2:10-12). The first degree of happiness is not to sin; the second is to recognize one's sins.

What then? Is God a minister of sin, if He Himself sends the working of falsehood? One may ask this in the Apostle's own words. May it never be. All such expressions of Scripture must be understood not in the sense of God's positive and direct will, but only in the sense of God's permission, which does not violate the evil human will. One interpreter, Oecumenius, observes: "Do not understand the word 'will send' as though God sent it, but as an expression of God's permission, in the Apostle's customary manner."

Nikanor (Kamenski)

God’s permission that men be subjected to the working of error corresponds to the human disposition. Seeing the incorrigible unbelief of those in error and their unyielding devotion to unrighteousness, God allows them to become certain of falsehood as though it were truth. The holy Apostle, as it were, expresses a desire for this, so that the impious may be clearly revealed. This happened before, when those persuaded by the prophets and Apostles did not believe them. As though seeing they did not see, and hearing they did not hear, and therefore they did not heed the divine teaching. This hardness will be still greater at the coming of Antichrist. It will give him the possibility of drawing to himself a great multitude of apostates from the faith, already inwardly prepared for this.

Blessed Theodoret says, “‘God will send a working of deception’ is said by the Apostle in place of, ‘He will permit deception to appear,’ so that the lovers of wickedness may be revealed. For God will not send this deception, but will destroy it by the word of His mouth.” “They would not have believed in Christ even if Antichrist had not come. But he will come in order to expose them. Then they will not be able to say, ‘Because Christ, a man, called Himself God, for precisely this reason we did not believe in Him. By contrast, it was foretold about Christ that He is the Savior and will bring countless blessings. All this was said to strengthen the faith of the Thessalonians. The same can be said to people today, both to believers and to those falling away from the faith.

The activity of this lawless one, or man of sin, will be exceedingly destructive for mankind. Satan will give him power, just as God the Father gave authority to Christ. The miracles accompanying his coming will have this satanic power (ενέργειαν) as their source. The Apostle does not say whether Antichrist himself will perform these miracles or someone else. In any case, these miracles will be miracles of falsehood. That is, they will be real miracles, not deception and not tricks. But they will be performed with the aim of deceiving men concerning the true faith. As miracles performed not for mankind’s benefit but for its harm, they may also be called false, since they do not correspond to their idea.

In addition, Antichrist will appear in every deceit of unrighteousness among those who perish. That is, his activity will seem entirely consistent with the demands of justice, but in reality it will be the denial of every righteousness. It will lead others into every kind of injustice. Still, Antichrist will produce such an effect only among those who are already on the path to perdition (έν τοις άπολλυμένοίς). This will be their punishment because they did not wish to receive the love of the truth. Thus, in the Apostle’s understanding, not only truth itself is given to man, but also love, the striving toward it. The Apostle most likely has in view here the truth revealed in Christ, or the Gospel, love for which the Apostles sought to implant in men’s hearts. For this guilt, this unwillingness to receive and love the truth, God will punish men by sending upon them, or subjecting them to, the power of deception (ενέργεια πλάνης). Thus they will believe falsehood in its whole form opposed to God (τω φενδει), if they did not wish to believe the truth. This manifestation of faith in falsehood is needed so that judgment over sinners may take place. Thus the appearance of the man of sin must serve as a touchstone, the final trial for mankind. In it, each person will decide definitively where he stands: on the side of truth or on the side of falsehood.

Theophan the Recluse

19th centuryChurch Father

This is a fearful moral punishment of God. “He will send” does not mean that He will deliberately send what they do not want. It means that He will allow to come to them what they desire and seek. The evil spirit of deception and falsehood constantly strives to possess everyone, darken everyone, and draw everyone into falsehood. But God does not let him in when, among those not following the truth, there are still some who offer hope of conversion. They have not yet completely given themselves over to false paths. They still sometimes think of leaving falsehood and standing on the side of truth. God does not let him in, so that they may not suffer inward violence from him. For he can shake even the firm, and not only these weak ones.

But when at last they completely give up and surrender to the destructive path they have chosen, when they unite themselves with it and join it with their hearts, and cease even to think of leaving it, then God withdraws His restraining hand from the evil spirit of deception. Once permitted, he rushes upon them, enters their hearts, and there begins to exert the working of deception, drawing them toward falsehood. And he will draw them. They will receive falsehood with all their heart, and then they will manifest it outwardly and visibly join themselves to Antichrist. But by this only what was hidden within will come out. Chrysostom asks, “Why, you say, will God permit all this? Do not fear, beloved, but listen to what the Apostle says. Antichrist will prevail only over those who are perishing, who would not have believed even if he had not come.” Theodoret adds, “The phrase, ‘God will send them a working of deception,’ is said by the Apostle in place of, ‘He will permit deception to appear,’ so that the lovers of wickedness may be revealed. For God will not send this deception, but will destroy it by the word of His mouth.” Oecumenius says, “‘He will send’ should not be understood as though God sent it. The Apostle is accustomed to express God’s permission in this way.” Theophylact says, “‘He will send’ means that He will permit him to come. See, first they rejected the truth. Then God abandoned them, and falsehood took possession of them.”
