The Church Fathers on this verse

3 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

The captives shall be taken away along with the rulers, and those who have been granted the privilege to worship alongside their deities, yet they will receive no assistance from them whatsoever; for what power does a deaf idol possess, and how can it be of service to anyone? The leaders of false teachings are akin to those who harm the unborn to expand their territories; in their quest to appear as shepherds of the multitudes, they inflict pain upon vulnerable souls, attempting to manipulate them into a hasty and inadequate faith with their misleading rhetoric, proclaiming distorted messages and expressing what arises from their own hearts rather than from the words of the Lord. For it is only by the Holy Spirit that anyone can denounce the Lord Jesus, and no one can declare condemnation against Jesus except through Beelzebub.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord declares that the idol of the Ammonites, Moloch, along with their sacrifices and leaders, will be taken into captivity.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I will command those in the womb of the Gileadites to expand their territory. Living near the Gileadites and treating them with cruelty, they not only took the lives of the men but also ended the lives of the unborn, destroying those who were pregnant. They did this in hopes of reaping the benefits of the land that the Israelites tended as their own numbers dwindled. Therefore, I will set fire to the gates of Rabbah, and it will be revealed with a shout on the day of battle, trembling on the day of its downfall. Melchom will be taken into exile, along with his priests and nobles, declares the Lord. This clearly indicates that in His warnings to others, He invokes fire; for He mentioned it specifically regarding the day of conflict.

He warns that the idol they revered would be captured alongside the people of Rabbah, as Melchom, the false deity of the Ammonites, is powerless to save the priests and nobles or even himself from captivity. Rabbah is recognized as the foremost city of the Ammonites, and today it is known as Philadelphia in the Greek language and Amman in the Syrian language.
