John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

I am the one who even then delivered (the Jews), he proclaims. To counter any doubts raised by others who might ask, "What are you defending? What if you fail?" he asserts, "No, I stood up for them." "And there is none to support me in this, except Michael your prince" (Dan. 10:21). He makes this statement to assure the prophet that he is not an enemy or adversary; rather, the prophet needs to trust in the truth rather than relying on the unauthorized. This is not said because he lacks assistance. Therefore, it is clear that he does not belong to the group of "princes." He then elaborates on all matters, revealing from where the challenges will arise. Subsequently, he announces the future redemption and honor of his people.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Since the initial year of Darius, the king of the Medes, I have steadfastly been present to support and uphold, says Daniel, as Darius conquered the Chaldeans and, to the best of his capacity, rescued me from my foes (even sealing the lion's den with his signet to ensure my safety from harm); I stood before God and sought His mercy on behalf of one who loved me, asking for strength and fortification for either him or his realm. While I persisted in prayer, I received insight through the Lord’s response.

It is customary for the prophets to introduce divine presence without prior announcement, as illustrated in the Psalm thirty-one; when the prophet called upon the Lord, declaring, "Thou art my refuge from trouble; thou preservest me from my adversaries; my joy, deliver me from those who oppress me," the presence of God suddenly appears, responding, "I will provide you with wisdom and direct your path: in it you shall proceed: I will set my gaze upon you" (Psalms 31:7-8). Likewise, in this instance, as the prophet implored for the reinforcement of his authority, God answered promptly.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

As soon as Cyrus took the throne and the appointed period for the exile came to an end, I remained steadfast until I had rescued the people and granted them liberation.
