Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Let us appoint men to go ahead of us to observe the land. However, because the observers arrived and you refused to recognize the produce of the land or heed the words of Caleb and Jesus, you have angered the Lord. This is the message He conveyed: Joshua, the son of Nun, who stands before you, bolster this man, for he will allocate the land as an inheritance to Israel. God humbled Moses by not allowing him to guide the Hebrews into the land flowing with milk and honey; nonetheless, He exalted him by placing Jesus, whom He set above Moses, in a position of service. As Moses was tasked with fortifying him, he held a greater role than Jesus.
