One Church Father comments on this verse

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The Sovereign Creator of the universe, desiring to establish a spiritual dominion on earth and to bring forth the lineage from which the foretold Messiah would arise, could have selected any nation and bestowed His unique grace and affection upon it. He could have identified individuals among humanity akin to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, directing His special attention to them and their descendants. Instead, His selection rested upon the patriarchs of Israel and their lineage, extending to the very end of time. Thus, should not the descendants of Israel view themselves as the most blessed of all peoples? Should they not cherish this divine favor above all else and reciprocate with love and complete devotion to Him? It would be an unforgivable act of ingratitude to respond to such love with indifference.
