Cyrill of Alexandria
When God's honor is affronted, it becomes perilous, even detrimental, to extend mercy; this is not the moment to indulge in weak, self-serving goodwill. In this regard, the Lord declared: ‘Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me’ (Matthew 10:37). Let the principle of empathy fade, and the strength of natural affection, along with all human attachments, be set aside, so that, in a sense, through righteous discipline, God may receive the honor due to Him. Would you not view as a virtuous act the punishment of those who engage in irredeemable apostasy, as they violate the supreme glory above all else, rather than carelessly dishonor Him, whom it would be more appropriate to honor through steadfastness?
