Deuteronomy 2:5Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Take ye then good heed that you stir not against them. For I will not give you of their land so much as the step of one foot can tread upon, because I have given mount Seir to Esau, for a possession.

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

God forbade them from engaging in battle with the Idumeans. This was intended to ensure that the Israelites, emboldened by His silence after the conflict with Sihon, would not launch further attacks. Instead, they would come to understand their enemies and allies. In the wilderness, He provided them with a law by means of actions, guiding them on how to interact with those they encountered.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

I will not allow you to harm the descendants of Esau or seize their inheritance. Such actions would be both unfair and futile since the Lord has granted this land to them by taking it from the Horreans.
