Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

I maintain that a person who embodies true strength and bravery must not permit their mind to become complacent. Instead, they ought to protect it against all forms of fear and laziness, firmly rooted in their trust in God, declaring, "I can do all things in Jesus Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13). They should resist the inclination to dwell on worldly matters, as these lead to ruin and render us unworthy before the Lord. As it is also written in Deuteronomy: (Deut. 20:1-8).
