The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

He speaks of the need for repentance, stating that if you have violated divine commandments and find yourself bound by these oaths, becoming a prisoner and enduring the burden of servitude, you should then, with a pure heart, seek to understand the reasons behind your captivity. If you turn to the lawgiver with humility, He will in His compassion restore you and return to you the inheritance of your forefathers.
