The Church Fathers on this verse

Ecclesiastes 8:17Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And I understood that man can find no reason of all those works of God that are done under the sun: and the more he shall labour to seek, so much the less shall he find: yea, though the wise man shall say, that he knoweth it, he shall not be able to find it.

I came to understand that one who is tainted by it, despite significant effort, can never achieve the genuine good.

The idea of wisdom, while not entirely comprehensive, holds immense significance for humanity, as it instructs individuals to yield peacefully to the authorities that govern life (8:1). It emphasizes the necessity of adhering to the laws set forth by the ruler (2-4) and recognizes that while humans possess free will, it must be exercised with thoughtful compliance to this ultimate command, rather than through irrational defiance of it (5-7). Wisdom also encompasses acceptance of the unavoidable power of death, which is inescapable for all (8), and aligns with the divine will of God, where sometimes an individual's destiny may not mirror their actions (9-14). It is within this alignment that true enjoyment of life can be found (15). Consequently, it is wise to embrace what currently exists, since attempts to grasp the meaning behind the world’s phenomena often prove fruitless (16-17).
