Even a modest town, home to only a handful of residents, is esteemed as a thriving and significant place when it boasts even a single wise and humble individual among its people. Such a person has the potential to protect the town from its adversaries and the defenses built against it.

After illustrating the benefits of wisdom positively in the preceding section, the preacher continues to highlight its merits negatively by contrasting the irrational acts of the foolish with the conduct of the wise. He begins this part by emphasizing that the outcome of an action is influenced more by the surrounding circumstances than by the skill of the individual performing it. Consequently, a person may encounter misfortune due to a poorly timed decision, even when their intentions and abilities are commendable. Nevertheless, wisdom carries significant advantages. To further emphasize the value of wisdom, the preacher offers an example, likely drawn from recent events. This example reveals that wisdom serves as the most effective defense against the chaos present in the world. However, if an individual possesses substantial wisdom yet allows a lack of sanity to overshadow it, this folly can obscure their wisdom and tarnish their reputation.
