The Church Fathers on this verse

Ecclesiastes 9:16Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And I said that wisdom is better than strength: how then is the wisdom of the poor man slighted, and his words not heard?

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Can we consider poverty or wealth as evil when both come from the Lord (Sir. 11:14)? Why is this expressed in this manner? In the Old Testament, wealth was highly esteemed, while poverty was looked down upon; one was seen as a blessing and the other as a curse. However, this perception has changed today.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

I proclaimed that understanding surpasses might, and the insights of the overlooked impoverished man, along with his unacknowledged words, hold greater significance. Even though the wise poor man from Ones remains unremembered while everyone indulges in pleasures and kneels before authority and wealth, I, in light of all previous reflections, choose to greatly esteem the neglected wisdom of the lowly and the words that others disregard.

Gregory the Wonderworker

3rd centuryChurch Father

While many may overlook that astute yet humble individual, I firmly value the power of wisdom over conventional strength. Yet, in this earthly realm, the combination of wisdom and lack of material wealth does not receive the respect it deserves.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

In the preceding section, the preacher highlighted the benefits of wisdom in a positive light. Now, he contrasts this by illustrating the folly of madness and the actions of the foolish, while showcasing the conduct of the wise. He begins by emphasizing that the effectiveness of an action is not solely reliant on the skill of the actor but rather on the context in which it occurs. Thus, an individual may encounter misfortune due to an ill-timed decision, even if their intentions are noble and their abilities commendable. Yet, wisdom possesses a significant edge. To demonstrate its value, the preacher offers an example, likely derived from the events of his time. This illustration conveys that wisdom is the most effective tool against the chaos present in the world. However, if someone, despite possessing considerable wisdom and thereby attaining glory, allows even a hint of madness to cloud their mind, this foolishness will obscure their wisdom and diminish their honor.
