Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Had Pharaoh truly been hardened, he would not have made such a declaration, as repentance does not reside in a heart that is unyielding. However, if one who is afflicted seeks mercy and one who has been rescued continues to strive, it indicates that he possesses freedom. Both circumstances demonstrate that he retains dominion over his own will.

Wlastow G.K.

19th centuryCommentator

Pharaoh pleads for pardon, acknowledging his wrongdoing and recognizing the Lord, requesting Him to intercede on his behalf. Moses, having heard Pharaoh's confession, no longer imposes conditions or poses questions; instead, he leaves Pharaoh, raises his hands toward the Almighty, and prays for the cessation of the affliction. The stature of Moses rises as Pharaoh's prominence wanes. At this point, Moses seeks nothing from Pharaoh; he is assured that the Lord will lead the Israelites out of Egypt and regards the timid, capricious, and deceitful Pharaoh with serene authority.
