This statement clearly illustrates that Pharaoh is determined to completely lose the Israelites; he understands that they will not return to his dominion after numerous broken promises to allow them to serve the Lord. If Pharaoh had possessed qualities akin to those of the wise and devout rulers from earlier dynasties, the Israelites would not have been enslaved, and the entire nature of the exodus would have been transformed. However, as we have previously stated, the Pharaoh depicted in Scripture was integral to the unfolding of Divine Providence.
