One Church Father comments on this verse

Macarius the Egyptian

4th centuryChurch Father

If the spirit longs and calls out to the Lord, He will send a spiritual Moses to free her from her captivity in Egypt. First, however, she must mourn and lament, and then the dawn of her liberation will appear. She experiences this freedom in the season of new blossoms, during springtime, when the soul's heart can yield the lovely branches of truth; after the harsh winter of profound ignorance and deep blindness—the result of sinful actions and disgraceful conduct—has come to an end.
