No transgression is more at odds with the Divine law than arrogance. In this sin, prideful spirit—the mediator that pulls us down and hinders our ascent—claims a greater authority, unless its concealed schemes are either circumvented through an alternate path or vanquished by the cross of the Lord. This cross is akin to Moses raising his arms for the sinful nation, which is referred to as Amalek, ruthlessly attacking and hindering the journey to the promised land.

Gregory of Nyssa

The Israelites engaged in battle against an outside nation known in Scripture as the Amalekites. This marked the first occasion that the people of Israel equipped themselves for war.

In the writings of Moses, divinely inspired, it is told that the Israelites, as they were departing Egypt, prepared for confrontation with Amalek. Amalek then advanced and engaged Israel at Rafidin. What arms did the Israelites wield in their struggle against the Amalekites while they were wandering in the desert without any? For instance, once the Egyptians perished in the Red Sea, their lifeless forms and all their weaponry soon washed ashore. The Israelites retrieved the discarded arms along with the bodies, employing them in their conflicts thereafter.

It is clear that the Amalekites either possessed the vital pasture lands on the north-eastern mountain plains of Sinai essential for Israel's sustenance or engaged in conflict with Israel to evict them from the grazing areas they had settled for their livestock and to seize their flocks. The struggle for mountain pastures is a widespread phenomenon occurring annually in various parts of Asia, where such pastures might not be regarded as anyone's property or are occupied at will, requiring the occupant to compensate the landowner. The narrative is further enriched by the timing of the Amalekite attack in June, a season when herds typically ascend to the mountains.

Some commentators suggest that the news of the abundant blessings God had granted Israel may have intensified the Amalekites' desire to claim this valuable resource. The battle took place at the defile of El Watiyeh, a strategic location to the north-east of Sinai.
