Clement of Alexandria
The commandment states: ‘Allow the child to remain with the mother, even for the first seven days.’ For if there is no event that occurs without purpose, and those who give birth possess an abundance of milk to nurture their young, then one who removes the child from the nursing process transgresses nature. Let the Greeks and all who criticize the Law feel shame, as they demonstrate compassion even towards silent creatures, while they abandon human infants to the whims of fate. Nonetheless, the Law has long served as a prophetic restraint on the cruelty of such individuals through this directive.

If it prohibits the separation of the young of mute animals from their mothers during the period of nursing, then so much more does it convey, in advance, a stern and unfavorable view of humanity, indicating that if they disregard the natural order, they might at least adhere to the established teaching.
