One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

What does it signify when it is stated, I will send hornets before you? Just as He unleashed frogs, lice, and flies upon the Egyptians, so will He dispatch hornets to the Canaanites and other nations. This demonstrates the unparalleled might of God, who employs the smallest of His creations to assist His faithful and to bring ruin upon those who oppose Him. He conveys this message through the blessed David, who proclaims: If My people would listen to Me, Israel would walk in My ways; for I would quickly and effortlessly subdue his adversaries (Psalm 80:14-15) - meaning that He would willingly and without struggle bring destruction upon those who defy them.
