3 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

The coverings included blue (hyacinth) skins and red rams' skins, symbolizing Christ, the Guardian of the Church. The blue represents His heavenly origin, while the red signifies His incarnation, as it reflects the true color of human flesh. Thus, this interpretation seems reasonable.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

The outer layer of the red skin of the lamb represents the third meditation. These three reflections pertain to the realm of intellect and spiritual beings. The outer layer of blue skins symbolizes the fourth meditation, relating to those who possess sensory experience and are clothed in physical bodies.

Wlastow G.K.

19th centuryCommentator

It has been previously stated that instead of the traditional blue skins, referred to in Hebrew as tahash, many interpret this as the skins of marine creatures. This suggests that the top of the tent was adorned with morocco, which consists of the skins of red rams. To protect the entirety of the tabernacle from the elements, coverings made from the waterproof skins of sea animals were placed over it, skillfully crafted, as seen in Arabia.
