From the examination of Leviticus 16:4, it becomes evident that the ritual cleansing involved not merely the washing of hands and feet, as mandated for all priests prior to any sacred duty (Exodus 30:19), but rather a thorough washing of the entire body. Similarly, on the significant Day of Atonement, the High Priest was required to undergo this entire cleansing (Leviticus, as cited), enabling him to purge himself of all impurities of body and spirit and to execute the holy duties with reverence towards God (2 Corinthians 7:1).

This act of purification performed by the High Priest before entering his sacred role and annually before the atoning sacrifice can be seen as a precursor to the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ, "the high priest without blemish" (Hebrews 7:26), who nonetheless submitted to John's baptism "to fulfill all righteousness" (Matthew 3:15).
