The various names of God utilized by the Patriarchs primarily reflected specific attributes of the Divine Nature. The name Elohim represented the Creator of all that exists, encompassing the idea of the unseen God. El-Shaddai conveyed the meaning of the All-Powerful, while Adonai signified the Lord. Moses inquired about the name by which he should identify God to a people who had largely lost touch with the traditions of their ancestors and were surrounded by idolatry. It was essential for them to learn the name of the Supreme Being who would deliver them with a “mighty hand.” This Name serves as a symbol for Israel and instills dread in their adversaries.
