Ephraem the Syrian

When Moses, through his intercession and remembrance of the patriarchs, had appeased God on the mount, he descended along with Jesus, holding the two tablets in his hands. And he spoke, and Jesus remarked, "The voice of the soldier is in the field." Had Jesus been among the camp prior to this moment, He would not have made this statement, as He would have been aware of the idolatrous calf. Likewise, if He had accompanied Moses, He would have listened to God's words to Moses, declaring, "Thy people are lawless." Thus, Jesus was not present with either Moses or the people, but instead positioned Himself between them; He spent seven days with the teacher, and following the Lord's call to Moses, He remained alone, apart from the teacher.

Joshua was present on the mountain alongside Moses, yet he did not receive any divine revelation; he seemed to be situated at a distance, unaware of Israel’s falling away, and mistakenly believed that the camp was under attack. Dr. Stanley, a theologian who has personally witnessed the Sinai landscape, noted a pathway that descends from the peak of Raz-Sufsafeh, weaving through gorges to a vantage point that overlooks the northern side of the mountain, near its base. As one travels this path, the vastness of the Sinai desert is obscured, although its sounds are perceptible. At a sharp curve, the trail leads to a platform that reveals the entire valley, positioned directly beneath the towering black rock of Raz-Sufsafeh, which ascends steeply.
