The Church Fathers on this verse

Ezekiel 14:7Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

For every man of the house of Israel, and every stranger among the proselytes in Israel, if he separate himself from me, and place his idols in his heart, and set the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and come to the prophet to inquire of me by him: I the Lord will answer him by myself.

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I declare to him: I, the Lord, respond to the one who remains steadfast in Me. He reiterates more explicitly what was previously stated, namely, that anyone who distances himself from My protective care and is consumed by wicked thoughts, even when aware of the impending consequences of his wrongdoing yet disregards them, if he approaches any false prophet, as if seeking guidance from Me on the path he should take, I, the Lord, have provided him an answer. I will allow the falsely appointed prophet to respond to him according to his own thoughts. Then the Lord pronounces a weighty consequence upon him.
