In the count of the exiles, God also refers to the sister of Jerusalem, calling her Sodom. By using the term Sodom, He indicates the tribes residing across the Jordan River. Just as He labeled Jerusalem as the daughter of the Hittite, despite the fact that its inhabitants were Hebrews, He similarly identifies the tribes beyond the Jordan as Sodomites due to their actions resembling those of Sodom. Though these tribes were not Sodomites, they were brothers of the Jews, descended from their father Isaac. Ultimately, it was not Sodomites who were restored from exile, but Hebrews.

After indulging in excessive material wealth, they became filled with pride and arrogance, relishing in their pleasures while looking down upon the impoverished. This led them into complete debauchery, resulting in a punishment that matched their sinful actions.

What happens as a result of pursuing a different path, such as indulging in base desires? Engaging in such indulgence means permitting the desires of the body to grow without restraint, continuously seeking to satisfy physical needs without a disciplined approach, unlike those who exercise discernment. What further repercussions arise from this? It leads to a heaviness in the mind, a significant burden on the body, and a laxity in one's physical state, ultimately resulting in a distraction from the service to the Lord. This distraction fosters laziness and neglect in spiritual practices, dulling one’s thoughts and leading to an unresponsiveness to divine matters.

The mind becomes clouded and incapable of clear reason amidst the overwhelming confusion and darkness that engulf the spirit, giving rise to despondency towards divine works and the Scriptures, as one fails to appreciate the sweetness found in God's words. Neglect of necessary duties ensues, accompanied by a wandering mind that strays into worldly pursuits. An excess buildup of physical desires manifests, resulting in troubled nights filled with unclean dreams and impure visions, invading the soul and fulfilling its base cravings. The bed of such a person, their garments, and even their entire being becomes sullied by a multitude of shameful acts that emerge incessantly, both at night and during the day, as the body consistently exudes impurities that taint one's thoughts and lead away from purity. The allure of sensual excitement permeates the individual, engendering a constant and overwhelming agitation throughout the body. They are beset by enticing thoughts that vividly present false beauty, perpetually stirring the mind towards a wrongful union with these thoughts, which one then embraces without hesitation, drawn in by a clouded intellect. This aligns with the words of the Prophet: This is the consequence faced by those akin to Sodom who indulged in extravagant feasting, and similarly, a wise sage remarked that those who excessively cater to bodily desires subject their souls to strife. Should one ever regain awareness and strive to exercise self-control, they may find it an arduous task due to the intense distractions of bodily urges and the overwhelming pull of lustful inclinations. Do you recognize the cunning nature of these wicked spirits? It is further noted that physical pleasure, born from the softness of youth, swiftly leads the soul toward the chains of passion, enveloping it in death and thus rendering the individual subject to divine judgment.

Due to the sinful indulgence and excess of Sodom, divine fire brought about their destruction. As the prophet Ezekiel states: ‘This is the iniquity of Sodom..... pride in the fullness of bread.’ In their pursuit of luxury, they disregarded even the natural law and engaged in perverse practices.

It is evident that humanity has fallen: but what led to this? Was it not the enticing fruit that caused him to descend from the blessed paradise to this wretched earth? Weigh it down further, and it may lead you from the earthly realm to the abyss of despair. Indeed, what caused the downfall of Sodom in such a devastating manner? The Prophet responds, “Pride, in the abundance of food, and the excess of drink; and she and her daughters were given to lust; these were hers, and her daughters.”
