The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The disgrace associated with your father's spouse will be uncovered within you, and the impurity of her who dwells in you will be denounced in you; this refers to your intimate relations with stepmothers, as the prophet described the exposure of your father's spouse's disgrace. This is highlighted in the law which states, "Let not the shame of your father's wife be revealed: the shame of your father is your father's shame" (Leviticus 18:8). Driven by intense desire and remarkable excess, you refrained from abstaining from women during their time of impurity, which is not only forbidden but also profoundly unclean. Therefore, you are further accused of being driven by lust.
