Jerome of Stridon

The word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, stating, Son of man! Record this day for yourself, today, when the king of Babylon laid siege against Jerusalem. Speak to the house of the provoked in a parable, saying, Thus says the Lord God: Set up a cauldron and fill it with water. Place into it the finest cuts, including thighs and shoulders, the best selections along with bones. Take the choicest animals, and pile the bones beneath; boil the mixture and let the bones simmer within it. Therefore, thus says the Lord God: Woe to the city of blood, the cauldron tarnished with rust, from which the rust has not been scrubbed off; pieces are being discarded from it, as the lot hasn't been cast for it.

In its midst is spilled blood; on a clean stone it has been shed, not upon the ground where it could be concealed by dust. To execute my wrath and take vengeance, I poured out his blood on a clean stone, ensuring it wasn't covered by dirt. Thus, the Lord God declares: Woe to the city of blood, which I will ignite in fierce flames. Gather the bones that I will incinerate; the flesh will be consumed, the entirety of it boiled, and the bones will disintegrate. Place it empty upon the coals to heat it red-hot until the copper melts and impurities are eradicated, while the rust is completely destroyed. Despite much effort, its deep corrosion remains, untouched even by fire. Your defilement is abhorrent, for I sought to cleanse you but you have refused to be purified from your impurities, and you will not be cleansed until my anger against you subsides. I, the Lord, have declared it; it will come to pass: I will not overlook, I will not spare, and I will not show compassion. According to your actions and your intentions, I have judged you, says the Lord. The word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of that month, proclaiming, Son of man! Take note of the day when the king of Babylon strengthened his siege against Jerusalem, and express this siege through a parable, a metaphor for them.

Theodoret of Cyrus

The seer mentions the moment when Babylon's king laid siege to Jerusalem. During this assault on the city, the Prophet predicts the looming disasters that would befall those already in captivity. Thus, the Lord instructs us to observe the day the adversary started to invade the city, ensuring that both the captives and those under siege would recognize that God had forewarned them from the outset. They were not vanquished by their foes but were suffering consequences for their own transgressions.
