Jerome of Stridon
The word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, and on the tenth day of that month, saying, Son of man, note this day for yourself; it is today on which the king of Babylon besieged Jerusalem. Deliver a parable to the house that is in anger and declare to them, Thus saith the Lord God: Prepare a cauldron, set it on fire, and pour water into it. Place into it the finest pieces: thighs and shoulders, the choice cuts rich with meat and bones. Gather the best animals, adding the heaps of bones beneath; let it all boil together, allowing the bones to simmer within it. Therefore, behold, declares the Lord God, woe to the city of blood, to the cauldron whose rust remains, with its rust not being removed; it is thrown out in parts, and the lot has not been cast upon it.

Its blood is within; upon a clean stone it has been shed, not on the ground where it could be obscured. In order to express My fury, to avenge, I have spilled his blood upon a clean stone that it may not be concealed by dust. Thus proclaims the Lord God, woe to the city of blood; a great fire I will decree. Gather the bones I will consume; let the flesh be destroyed, all its joints simmered, and the bones will disintegrate. Place it empty on the coals so it becomes hot, its brass melting, with its impurities and rust obliterated. Though much labor has been invested, its stubborn rust remains, untouched even by fire. Your filth is repulsive, for I sought to purify you, yet you have remained in your dirtiness, and you will not be cleansed until I withdraw My wrath from you. I, the Lord, have declared it; it shall come to pass and I will act: I will not overlook, nor spare, nor show compassion. According to your deeds and intentions shall I judge you, declares the Lord.
The word of the Lord came to me in that ninth year, the tenth month, on the tenth day, saying, Son of man, mark this day as the king of Babylon commenced his siege against Jerusalem. Present a parable to the house of the conquerors, saying, Thus saith the Lord God: Set a cauldron; pour water into it; place the divided parts within, every choice piece—shins and shoulders, the best cuts separated from the bones, from the choicest creatures; let the bones be kindled beneath them as they boil. Therefore speaks the Lord to Adonai: O city of blood, a cauldron with its rust unyielding, and its rust undisturbed; it has been broken into pieces, the lot fell not upon it. Its blood remains within; upon a highly polished stone have I shed it, not upon the earth where it may be covered by dust. To amplify My anger with vengeance, I spilled his blood on that perfectly smooth stone making certain it stayed uncovered. Thus declares the Lord to Adonai, woe to the city of blood; I will raise fear and add wood to the flames, igniting a fire that shall consume the flesh, let the broth evaporate, and the bones be entirely burned upon the coals. It is set ablaze that its brass might be ignited and purified, along with its impurities and rust consumed within. The rust shall be humbled, and his great rust shall not be removed; it shall be put to shame. Your defilement is appalling, for you have not cleansed yourself from your wickedness. What shall be the outcome if you are not purified until I execute My fury upon you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I shall come to execute; I will not tarry, I shall show no compassion, and I will be resolute. According to your ways and designs will I judge you, declares Adonai the Lord. Hence, I shall judge you based on your blood and your intentions, you unclean, renowned, and utterly wicked.
