Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Therefore, declares the Lord God, I will bring a sword against you, wiping out both humanity and livestock. Egypt will become a wasteland and a desolate region, and they will know that I am the Lord, for they have proclaimed, "My river is mine, and I made it." Behold, I stand against you and your rivers, transforming the land of Egypt into arid stretches, ravaged by the sword from the tower of Siena to the farthest reaches of Ethiopia. No man or beast shall tread upon it, and it will remain uninhabited for forty years. I will turn Egypt into a desolation among desolate lands, and its cities will lie in ruins during this time. I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them across different lands.

For thus says the Lord God, after forty years, I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they have been scattered. I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and establish them in the land of Phatur, their homeland. They will exist as a lowly kingdom, the least among the nations. They will no longer rise above other nations, for I will diminish them to prevent their dominance over others. They will provide no hope for the house of Israel, leading them into sin, causing them to flee and follow after them, and they will know that I am the Lord.

This follows from their role as a broken reed to the house of Israel, having not only failed them but also, as Isaiah prophecied, having pierced their hand and shoulder, loosening the strength of those who relied upon them. Therefore, I will bring upon you the sword of your enemies, leading to the destruction of both people and cattle, and the land of Egypt will become desolate once more, so that the Egyptians will again recognize that I am the Lord.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The Lord declares to Adonai: I will bring a sword against you, and I will eradicate both man and beast from your midst. Egypt will become a wasteland, and they will recognize that I am the Lord. Despite your inflated sense of self, you have committed to assist others; yet you know all too well that you will be unable to protect your own territory when I deliver judgment upon you. My people will come to acknowledge My authority. Reflecting once more on their haughty declarations, He states: You have claimed, My rivers are my rivers, and I will create them. He does not threaten all of Egypt with ruin, but specifically targets regions from Magdol and Siena to the borders of Ethiopia, proclaiming desolation for these cities, which are only temporary and not eternal.
