The Church Fathers on this verse

Ezekiel 31:18Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

To whom art thou like, O thou that art famous and lofty among the trees of pleasure? Behold, thou art brought down with the trees of pleasure to the lowest parts of the earth: thou shalt sleep in the midst of the uncircumcised, with them that are slain by the sword: this is Pharao, and all his multitude, saith the Lord God.

Since you aim to resemble not the trees that were planted alongside you but the Creator Himself, I decree that you, alongside the trees that share your mindset, be uprooted and cast into the depths of the earth. This outcome is appropriate for both. To this, God declares: Among the uncircumcised you shall rest with those afflicted by sores. He perceives the uncircumcised not merely in a physical sense but within the heart. For both the New Testament and the Old Testament testify to the significance of a circumcised heart. Thus, God, through the prophet, states that all the nations are uncircumcised in body, but the house of Israel is uncircumcised in spirit (Jeremiah 9:26).

If you refuse to amend your arrogance and continue to harbor this excessive pride, you shall face the same consequences as those who have done likewise. He concludes the statement: Thus says the Lord God concerning Pharaoh and all of his mighty forces. Earlier, he questioned, To whom have you compared yourself in your greatness? After referencing the kings of Assyria and Babylon, he affirms, So shall it be for Pharaoh and all his mighty hosts: if one who is greater and more renowned than you faces such a fate, you, too, with your similar malevolence, should anticipate the same judgment.
