Jerome of Stridon

Thus, the Lord speaks to the unfaithful shepherds, declaring that because of their actions and the transgressions I have mentioned, I will personally intervene with the shepherds, reclaiming My flock from those who would prefer to bear heavy burdens than to lead even the least of My children astray (Matthew 18). The gravest consequence for them will be their removal from the role of shepherds; they will no longer tend to My flocks, instead masquerading as sheep while hoarding wealth for themselves. I will rescue My people from their misguided leadership. I will take from their grasp what they have consumed with ravenous greed, as I bring forth My salvation from their mouths.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Through these statements, He indicates the end of the Jewish high priesthood and kingship. For He declares, I will rescue my sheep from the wicked oversight of those who never showed them any compassion, but only sought to devour them. He then assures us of salvation through our Lord and Savior.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

I acknowledge the admonition and turn my attention to myself and to others entrusted by divine providence with the care of souls. Indeed, dear brethren and fellow-servants, we must reflect with reverence and great diligence on whether we embody the qualities our ministry demands. I am not asking if you possess the notable marks of grace as St. Paul or St. Alexis did. The Holy Spirit allocates unique and exceptional gifts of grace according to His sovereign will, and these are not universally sought after. Rather, do we strive to gain sufficient spiritual illumination so that we may guide others effectively and genuinely? Is our lifestyle arranged in a manner that teaches through actions rather than mere words? Are we vigilant over our own souls?

How can we instruct others if we are not fervently committed to our own growth? How can we lead others towards spiritual vitality if our own lives are ensnared in worldly distractions? How can we inspire others to persistent and fervent prayer if our participation in communal worship lacks reverence and attentiveness to the sacred rites? The verbal sheep, unlike the silent sheep, can discern safe pastures from perilous wastelands; hence, they bear responsibility if they fall into the jaws of the wolf. However, will not the shepherd be accountable if he sleeps while the lost sheep ought to be gathered and restored? Let us be mindful of ourselves and our duties, lest the stern judgment of the Lord, which was directed at the shepherds of Israel, befall us as well—‘Shepherds tend to their own sheep, but My sheep they will not shepherd. Behold, I am against the shepherds.’
