Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

And to the remaining tribes: from the eastern boundary to the western boundary of Benjamin, one region. From the border of Benjamin extending east to west, one region designated for Simeon. From the boundary of Simeon stretching from the east to the west, one region allocated to Issachar. From Issachar's border running from the eastern limit to the western limit, one region assigned to Zebulun. From Zebulun's edge going from the east to the shore of the sea, one region set aside for Gad. Beyond Gad, the southern boundary at noon shall be defined from Tamar to the waters of the dispute at Kadesh, the inheritance near the great sea. This is the territory that you shall distribute among the tribes of Israel by lot, and these are their designated portions, says the Lord God. The term ‘one,’ which is consistently used in relation to the five and seven tribes, denotes either inheritance, possession, or heritage, although Aquila and Symmachus interpret it as a neutral term meaning limit.
