Jerome of Stridon

When adversity arises, individuals will pursue tranquility, yet none will be found. This assertion, according to the Seventy, is impossible. For if forgiveness is extended, how can they seek peace and fail to attain it? The one who has received the message from the apostles, "Peace to this house" (Matthew 10:12), yet has not embraced it or rested it in his heart, will not discover it through wicked actions; he will search for peace and find none. This is the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7), the same peace that the Saviour bestowed upon the apostles as He ascended victoriously to the Father.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Appeals for tranquility will arise amid turmoil, yet it will not be granted; during the most severe trials, they will beseech for mercy and salvation, but it will remain elusive.
