Jerome of Stridon
Those who returned from Babylonian exile, including the leaders, priests, Levites, and the rest of the community, turned away from their Israelite wives. This decision stemmed from various challenges such as poverty, the burdens of a lengthy journey, and the frailty of their circumstances, leaving them exhausted, weak, and indifferent to their hardships. Instead, they chose to marry foreign women, notable for their youth, beauty, and noble lineage or wealth. Consequently, Ezra was compelled to confront these individuals, urging them to annul their recent marriages and reinstate the wives they had cast aside.
