John Chrysostom

Let us pay heed, dear ones, to these profound words. When we reflect on the age of our forefather — who received this revelation in his twilight years — we are astounded by the faith of this just man and the boundless might of our compassionate God. From one whose body was frail and who stood on the brink of death, God predicts an extraordinary increase in descendants, so that entire nations will arise from him. Furthermore, He declares that “kings shall spring from thee.” Observe how the promises become increasingly magnificent. God emphasizes, “Very, very, I will multiply thee.” The repetition is intentional, meant to reveal to the righteous an astonishing abundance of offspring.

I will elevate you and position you among the peoples, specifically among numerous tribes; this certainly refers to the offspring of Esau, Hittite, and Ishmael, who established various nations. From you, kings will arise, as was indicated to the monarchs of the tribes of Judah and Ephraim, as well as to the rulers of Edom.

Let us turn our attention once more to the divine gift, as there is nothing more perfect than it. Indeed, what could rival wisdom, what could be more despicable than empty folly, and what could be more detestable than superstition? Therefore, with the assurance of ultimate perfection, God declares to Abraham: I will greatly multiply you, and from you I will bring forth nations, and kings will arise from you; for the righteous individual possesses a wealth of blessings (Proverbs 28:20), and he flourishes rather than diminishing like the fool. The nations find their origin in Abraham, signifying that his faith has been imparted to the nations and rulers of this era who have believed and surrendered to the Lord Jesus, to Whom it is proclaimed, Kings shall present gifts to You (Psalm 67:30).

This holds true, as from Abraham’s lineage shall come not only kings of merit, but also those who will resist sin, and evil shall not prevail against them, for death shall hold no dominion over them (Hos. 13:14; Rom. 6:9; Rev. 20:6). We also recognize that the insights of a virtuous mind are noble and regal, for, like Abraham, he does not produce a generation of mediocrity, but rather abounds in royal descendants. The land was conferred upon him in complete possession, so that he might reign over the flesh and not be ensnared by earthly desires, but that the body might willingly serve the pursuits of the spirit. The figure of Abraham clearly symbolizes the mystery of the Church, which, through the legacy of faith, encompasses the entire world. He is rightly referred to as ‘the chosen father of sound’ and ‘the father of faith’ (Rom. 4:11), ‘the father of a righteous confession.’

Dimitri of Rostov

When Ishmael reached the age of thirteen, Abraham was already ninety-nine years old. At that time, God appeared to him once more, reaffirming His earlier promise: “You shall be,” He declared, “the father of many nations” (Gen. 17:4). He transformed Abram's name to Abraham, meaning the father of many, and He also renamed Sarai to Sarah, which signifies the mother of many. Despite being ninety years old, the Lord assured her that He would alleviate her barrenness and that she would bear a son named Isaac, from whom a great nation would arise.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

From you will arise rulers. Hebrews, Jews, Israelites, Idumeans, Saracens, and others. Ultimately, it is from Abraham that the King of kings and Lord of lords emerges (Rev. 19:16), along with the kings and priests He provides (Rev. 1:6).

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

Kings will emerge from you. Consequently, numerous nations and many monarchs have descended from Abraham: kings of the Jews, Hebrews, Israelites, Saracens, and others. The King of kings, the Lord Jesus Christ, is a descendant of Abraham through physical lineage.
