John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Upon observing the figure standing by the oak tree, Abraham demonstrated respect and readiness to serve the visitors. The traveler inquired, "Where is Sarah your wife?" This question quickly made it clear to Abraham that the visitor was no mere mortal, as he knew the name of Abraham's spouse. Abraham replied, "She is in the tent." The one who approached, embodying God, sought to offer Abraham a promise transcending human limitations. By specifically naming Sarah, it was made evident that this presence in his tent was exalted above humanity.

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Did not the Lord, who foretold the impending ruin of Sodom, know where Sarah was located? He was aware, yet He intended to teach us about the virtue of decency in women. They should not draw the attention of guests through immodest behavior, but rather conduct themselves with propriety. Abraham also declares for your benefit that Sarah is in the tent, to guide you on what to expect from a wife. Even in her advanced years, Sarah exemplifies a modesty akin to that of a young woman, which is why the Lord assured her of a son.
