The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

When Esau became aware of this, along with the fact that Jacob had received his father's blessing and a command not to take a wife from the daughters of Canaan, he realized that Jacob had traveled to Mesopotamia. In a bid to rectify his past mistakes and gain his father's favor, it is reported that he took as a wife Mahalatha, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son. Consider, beloved, the wisdom with which this devoted mother shielded Jacob from harm by creating a believable reason for his departure. She neither revealed Esau's malevolence nor disclosed the true motives to their father but advised her son in a manner that would instill fear and encourage him to heed her counsel. At the same time, she inspired their father with thoughts that aligned with her intentions. Consequently, the righteous man concurred with her suggestions, allowing Jacob to depart and blessing him as he went on his way.
