John Chrysostom
When Esau became aware of this situation, he also learned that Jacob, having received his father's blessing, was given a directive to avoid marrying any of the daughters of Canaan. Jacob then traveled to Mesopotamia—perhaps intending to rectify his previous mistake—by marrying Mahalatha, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son. Observe, dear ones, how astutely this caring mother safeguarded Jacob by crafting a sensible rationale for his departure. She neither exposed Esau's malice nor disclosed the true motive to their father; instead, she advised her son wisely, using fear to persuade him to heed her counsel. Moreover, she instilled corresponding thoughts within the father. Consequently, the just man concurred with her advice and permitted Jacob to leave, bestowing his blessings upon him.
