John Chrysostom
The residents promptly acted upon the declaration of Emor and Shechem, and without hesitation, each of them adorned their flesh with the mark of circumcision.
And they all agreed, and circumcised all the males.
2 Church Fathers comment on this verse
The residents promptly acted upon the declaration of Emor and Shechem, and without hesitation, each of them adorned their flesh with the mark of circumcision.
They complied with Emmor, among others. The swift acceptance of an outside tradition, in order to avoid disbelief, should be understood in light of the Shechemites' limited numbers, their loyalty to their leader, and the prospects of gaining power and riches that seemed to beckon them.
