It is evident that he consistently named locations based on the events that transpired there, ensuring that their memories would endure. Yet, one might wonder how Rebekah’s nurse was present with Jacob upon his return from Mesopotamia, prior to his reunion with his father. We can surmise that she likely desired to accompany Jacob as he departed from Laban to see Rebekah after a lengthy separation; however, since she had not yet encountered her, she passed away in that place.

Now, if you agree, we shall conclude our discussion here, content with what has been conveyed. We encourage you, out of love, to safeguard your own integrity and the purity of the young men. From this neglect, as we might say, every form of evil arises. Habits, when allowed to fester over time, inflict such damage that those who indulge in immorality become incapable of heeding any moral instruction, drawn instead to the paths where the adversary leads them. He ultimately takes charge of them, whispering destructive thoughts that the youth eagerly embrace, fixating solely on immediate gratification, oblivious to the impending grief.

Thus, I implore you to extend your support to the younger generation, lest we suffer consequences for their actions. Are you not aware of the distress that Eli, the elder, experienced for not properly addressing the shortcomings of his sons? When an ailment demands surgery, and a physician opts for mere ointment, the condition may spiral into hopelessness due to inadequate treatment. Similarly, that elderly gentleman, rather than employing suitable measures for his children’s offenses, opted for leniency; as a result, he faced punishment along with them.

Let this example instill fear in you; as parents, let us diligently oversee their upbringing. Generally, let each individual residing within the community strive for the welfare of his neighbor, regarding it as his greatest benefit, so that all who aspire toward righteousness can evade the snares of wickedness and, having achieved virtue, receive the abundant grace from above. This is attainable for all of us through the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory, power, and honor, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

In the event that Rebekah's nurse, identified as Devorah, has passed away—a matter which the Seventy Interpreters have interpreted a Hebrew term for the second time, namely ‘nurse, meneceth (מֵינֶ֣קֶת)—it puzzles me why they chose to use the term “property” in one instance and “nurse” in another, as seen in Genesis 24:59.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

Devorah passed away. The question of whether she came to Jacob from Isaac's household or accompanied him from Laban's is ultimately inconsequential. Beneath the oak tree, the graves within the forest appear to have been selected for their tranquil surroundings, protection from the uncertainties of future generations, and their natural commemorative qualities (1 Chronicles 10:12). Referred to as the oak of mourning, this designation suggests that Jacob, either out of reverence for his father, in memory of Devorah, or in accordance with tradition, arranged for a notable burial. The significance of this name during Moses' time may explain why he documented Devorah's death.

Notes: Augustine (contra lovin.) discusses the troubles of married life among other matters, highlighting the honor due to the nurse and caretaker of his wife.
