John Chrysostom

Cilla, he states, was the mother of Tubalcain, who became a craftsman skilled in working with bronze and iron. The Scriptures also highlight the profession of Cilla’s offspring, indicating that he embraced the vocation of a blacksmith. Observe how gradually the structure of human society was established. Initially, Cain constructed a city and named it after his son. Among the sons of Lamech, one pursued the herding of livestock, another adopted blacksmithing, and the third created the zither and the harp. The account also mentions the sister of Tubalcain, as noted by Noema. This introduction of a woman’s name is indeed remarkable and represents the first instance in which Scripture specifically identifies a female figure.

The revered prophet did not make this mention casually or without purpose; rather, it serves to reveal a deeper mystery, which we will examine at a later time. For now, we shall maintain our focus; this commentary regarding Noah holds significance and demands thorough exploration and interpretation, so that we might fully understand it and glean valuable insights.

This excerpt narrates the lineage of Cain, stating that Methuselah was the father of Lamech. Lamech, in turn, took two wives; one was named Adah and the other Cilla. Adah bore Jabal, who became the patriarch of those who reside in tents and tend flocks. Jabal had a brother named Jubal, who is recognized as the father of all who create melodies with strings and wind instruments. Cilla also introduced Tubalcain, known for crafting tools of bronze and iron, and his sister was named Naamah. This concludes the genealogy of Cain, which encompasses eight generations from Adam, including Adam himself, leading to Lamech, who had two wives. The eighth generation consists of his offspring, highlighting that among them, a woman is noted.

This beautifully illustrates that the earthly realm, until its conclusion, will continue to produce physical lives through the union of spouses. Thus, the wives of this individual, referenced here as the final ancestor in the line, are identified by their specific names.

Cain's existence lasting until the seventh generation is primarily indicated by the divine decree of God's judgment and is additionally supported by the longevity of human life observed in the early generations. Given that Adam, Cain's father, lived through to the ninth generation, specifically up to Lamech, and passed away in Lamech's fifty-sixth year, it is not unexpected that Cain would also live to see the seventh generation.

Sella, the other wife of Lamech, bore Tovel (referred to by some as Tubalcain), who belonged to the family of the Mlathobites and was a skilled craftsman in working with brass and iron. His sister Noema was the pioneer of spinning both wool and linen, and she mastered the art of weaving. Additionally, she was instrumental in discovering how to produce butter and cheese from animal milk, contributing significantly to women's crafts. The descendants of Cain also engaged in sorcery and incantations, seeking communion with demons. This tribe, characterized by both reverence and wickedness, ultimately faced destruction in the flood.

Fovel, the smith, known as תובל-קין (Tuvalcain) in Hebrew, is typically regarded by most scholars as a single name. However, the seventy translators did not consider קין (Cain) as an integral part of this name, and in Arabic, it signifies a blacksmith. Thus, it is likely that תובל-קין refers not to Tuvalcain but rather to Tuval, or Fovel, the metalworker, who is recognized as the progenitor of all smiths. Here, the Hebrew text seems incomplete and is clarified through the insights of Onkelos, considering the previous phrases. Working with copper and iron, the skill of metalworking honors its creator, as it requires a deep understanding of nature, which is crucial for the advancement of agriculture.

Notably, the crafting of copper suggests that the artisan has achieved a level of proficiency beyond mere necessity. Regarding the name of Noema, it is unclear from the account why Moses chose it, unless it implies a form of condemnation, as it translates to beautiful.

Prior to Fovel's discoveries, tools and utensils were crafted from wood and stone. However, Fovel recognized that iron and copper were far more advantageous for many applications due to their superior strength and durability. It is evident that he conducted thorough studies on the characteristics of these metals and successfully developed techniques for processing iron and copper ore, as well as establishing methods for metallurgy and casting. In addition to agricultural and household tools, Fovel likely created weapons such as swords and spears for combat and defense against adversaries. Furthermore, Tovel's sister Noema, whose name translates to "beautiful," is believed to have been the first to exploit beauty to entice the vulnerable, while simultaneously being the originator of garments and adornments that enhance natural beauty through artificial means.
