As the famine grew worse and extended to Canaan, where Jacob resided, he learned of the availability of wheat in Egypt. He then spoke to his sons, asking, "Why are you sitting idle? I have heard there is bread in Egypt; travel there and purchase some for us, so that we may live and not perish." He questioned their inaction, urging them to go to Egypt to secure their basic needs. All of this unfolded so that Joseph's brothers would witness the events firsthand and fulfill the interpretation of the dream that had been shared with them when they listened to Joseph recount his vision.

And God the Father declared: out of Egypt I called My Son (Matt. 2:15; Hos. 11:1). From that grain arose the plentiful harvest, for there could not have been a yield if the Egyptians had not first sown the seeds.

The region of Canaan was one of the many areas afflicted by famine. The household of the revered patriarch endured the same struggle with inadequate provisions. Word came to the aged father that there was grain available in Egypt. He then addressed his sons, saying, "I have learned that there is wheat in Egypt; why are you not considering this?"
