John Chrysostom

When they arrived at Joseph's residence, they communicated their bewilderment to the steward of the house. They recounted discovering silver hidden in their sacks and mentioned, "We have brought double the amount of silver to return what we found and to purchase food for ourselves." This situation reveals how hardship has softened their hearts and prompted them to humility.

They approached the threshold of the house to inform the master of the household about their purpose. There are those who are apprehensive about entering, more inclined to justify themselves through their actions rather than to accept grace (cf. Galatians 2:16, 21), thus they are made to confess at the entrance. However, the one who longs for the fruit of the virgin’s womb and the promises of the Lord inherits the blessings of the Son and is not disheartened at the door. Instead, at the conclusion of this life, he sheds the adversary, allowing him, recognizing his own greater sin, to seek the exalted places swiftly. Consequently, the master of the house responded with a profound answer. Understand who it is when you read that Moses was faithful in all his house (Hebrews 3:5).

Indeed, the stewards of the house include Moses, Peter, Paul, and the other saints, yet the true Master is Christ alone. As it is written, "And Moses is faithful in all his house, as a minister, to testify the things that were to be declared; and Christ is faithful as a Son in his house; and his house is us, if we hold firmly to the freedom and dignity of our calling."
