John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

When they arrived at Joseph's residence, they detailed their bewilderment to the head servant, explaining how they discovered silver hidden in their bags. They continued by saying, “We have brought back double the amount of silver so that we can return what we found and purchase provisions for ourselves.” Their misfortunes have indeed humbled their hearts and softened their spirits.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Thus, we will express our acknowledgment to the architect of the dwelling that silver was discovered in our garments until they investigate what we have brought and accuse us of theft. Just as Benjamin’s arrival alleviates the doubt of wrongdoing, so too shall the confession of our mouths liberate us from the suspicion of dishonesty. When they approached him, the brothers said, “When we purchased bread here, we returned and opened our sacks, and lo, each man’s silver was in his sack; we present it back to you, for it is wrong to take with the bread what is equivalent to its value.”
