John Chrysostom
These statements deeply affected Joseph, clearly demonstrating both his brothers' esteem for their father and their affection for him as their sibling.
Therefore I, thy servant, will stay instead of the boy in the service of my lord, and let the boy go up with his brethren.

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse
These statements deeply affected Joseph, clearly demonstrating both his brothers' esteem for their father and their affection for him as their sibling.
Yet now, following your instructions, we have brought our brother, and we, your servants, find ourselves in a grave injustice. I implore you, allow me to serve in place of this young man; just let him return to his brothers and to his father. I have held him close to my heart, and without him, I cannot go back to my father, or I will witness his sorrow unto death.
