2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

Look, your eyes and Benjamin's eyes witness the truth. You may have found it hard to believe the accounts you heard about me, but now you see me in person, and if my father doubts your word, let him trust Benjamin instead.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

Joseph's siblings were so astonished by all that they heard from him that they questioned whether the one addressing them was truly Joseph or if someone else was using his name. To comfort them, Joseph said, "Behold, your eyes see the eyes of Benjamin, my brother." In other words, you might doubt me if others had shared different tales about my life; however, you are witnessing my presence and my tears which bear witness to my truthfulness. As direct witnesses, you can confidently relay my message to your father. If your father doubts you, let him place his trust in Benjamin.
