In the land of Egypt, Joseph had two sons: Manasseh and Ephraim, born to Asenath, the daughter of Potipher, a priest of Iliopolis. Manasseh's descendants included Mahir, whom his concubine, named Cyrus, bore, and Mahir was the father of Gilead. Ephraim, Manasseh's brother, had sons named Sutalaam and Taam. The descendants of Sutalaam included Edom. The details regarding the lineage of Manasseh and Ephraim are absent from both the Hebrew and Samaritan texts. This information has been drawn from the Book of Numbers (Num. 26:29ff.) and the First Book of Chronicles (1 Chronicles 7:14ff.).
