Who possesses wisdom and will grasp this? Who among the sensible will attain understanding? The paths of the Lord are just, and the righteous shall traverse them; however, the wicked will find them burdensome. He rightly identifies as the most astute the individual who comprehends it, for the insight into divine truths is not granted to all who desire it. As it is written, "No one can understand ‘a parable and a dark word, but the sayings of the wise, and divination’" (Proverbs 1:6), unless aided by divine illumination, should Christ choose to bestow His grace upon the mind and heart, like a brilliant ray of light.

Moreover, He teaches that following the righteous and sacred path is not burdensome for those who cherish goodness, whereas for those lacking this virtue, it can be quite challenging. The former are attracted to and compelled towards every noble deed, striving fervently to attain what is commendable, while the latter become timid, lacking the power to perform virtuous acts due to their prior disregard for Him. Thus, if we are wise and prudent, let us beseech God for the strength to act righteously, and He will surely provide, for He is the Merciful One. Through Christ, may we be filled with spiritual fortitude, to God the Father be glory, along with the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Ephraem the Syrian

Who possesses wisdom and insight... to recognize that the paths of the Lord are just? The righteous will walk in them, referring to those from the lineage of Hezekiah who responded positively to the divine counsel. Conversely, the wicked will find themselves exhausted by these paths, meaning the descendants of Ephraim will become weary in the ways of the Lord. As a result, they will be taken into captivity for disregarding the messages of the prophets.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Who can claim wisdom and grasp its essence? Who possesses insight and will comprehend it? The paths of the Lord are just, and the righteous shall tread upon them while the wicked will stumble. In the LXX: Who is wise and shall comprehend it? Who is discerning and will understand it? The just walk in the ways of the Lord, but the wicked will become weary in them. Posing the questions of who is wise enough to know or understand reflects the obscurity of this text and its challenge to articulate.

If the author acknowledges this difficulty or even futility, then we, with vision obscured by the grime of sin, and unable to perceive the brilliant light of the sun, can only echo the words of Scripture: ‘O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and understanding of God, how unsearchable are His judgments, and how inscrutable are His ways (Romans 11:33).

Who, apart from the revelation of Christ, can fathom the significance of Jezreel, or her sister who is called ‘Unpardoned,’ along with the third sibling ‘Not My People’; what does the lawless adulteress signify; what is the nature of the alliance formed with the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens; who is that David to whom the people will return, who will rise on the third day, akin to the morning light; who is the one, as declared by the prophet, that will instruct us in righteousness; in whose likeness Israel will exit Egypt, cradled and nurtured with love; who is he that abolishes death, halts its sources, drains its waters, and confiscates treasures long secured? There are myriad truths whose full meaning would take much to recount. Therefore, all who are holy and righteous must acknowledge the just paths of the Lord.

The paths of the Lord encompass the readings of both the Old and New Testaments and the interpretation of the Scriptures. One cannot truly find the right way unless they turn to the Lord, having the veil that obscured Moses's sight lifted from them. If one, like David, declares, Open mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things from Your law (Psalm 118:18); they will walk in His ways, discover Christ, and see how the Jews and heretics, termed ungodly by Scripture, are caused to stumble—wearied and fallen, as stated in Scripture, Behold, this man is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel (Luke 2:34).

Thus speaks the sacred David, as he reflects on God's blessings in the one hundred sixth Psalm: Who is wise and will keep these things, and will understand the mercies of the Lord (Psalm 106:43)? True wisdom and discernment are essential for grasping and comprehending God's words, as well as for obeying and upholding them. Without the illumination of the Holy Spirit, it is impossible for anyone to truly understand His teachings, nor can they uphold them without divine assistance. Those who deeply love God and receive His support walk on the path of righteousness and are regarded as just; conversely, those who live in unrighteousness and tread a misguided path earn the consequences of their sins.

The God of all humanity, who wishes for everyone to attain salvation and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim. 2:4), may we also be counted among the righteous instead of the wicked, so that, living in accordance with His holy commandments, we may exalt Him, as the holy Apostle teaches, in both body and spirit (1 Cor. 6:20). To Him belongs all glory, honor, and worship, alongside His only begotten Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
